About the Role
Based in BYD's Melbourne office in Mulgrave, this role will support our Product team. The Product Technical Specialist is responsible for supporting vehicle technical readiness, local market compliance, and product validation activities for Australia and selected regional markets. The role acts as a key technical link between local business functions and global engineering teams, ensuring vehicles are fit for market, compliant with relevant regulations, and aligned with expected product attributes before and after launch.
This role requires strong capability in vehicle homologation, ANCAP awareness, hands-on vehicle assessment, and the ability to coordinate and participate in local testing and validation activities. The position also supports specification accuracy, cross-functional technical problem solving, and product management tasks across the vehicle lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Homologation and Regulatory Support
Support local vehicle homologation activities for Australia and applicable regional export markets.
Review and manage technical documentation required for compliance, certification, and market entry.
Liaise with headquarters and relevant external stakeholders to obtain, verify, and track homologation-related documents and approvals.
Assist with interpretation of ADR, ECE, and other applicable regulatory requirements affecting vehicle specification and launch readiness.
Support technical and compliance activities for additional markets under management where required.
2. Product Validation, Testing Coordination and Participation
Coordinate local vehicle validation activities to confirm the agreed technical attributes of newly launched or updated models.
Develop and manage evaluation plans covering what is to be tested, when testing should occur, where it should be carried out, and what equipment or tools are required.
Participate directly in hands-on vehicle inspections, testing, validation drives, and technical checks.
Work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Aftersales, Sales, Accessories, and external partners to ensure validation outcomes are captured and actions closed.
Support pre-launch and post-launch technical verification activities to ensure product readiness for market.
3. ANCAP and Safety Attribute Understanding
Support local understanding of ANCAP requirements, vehicle safety attributes, and test-related expectations relevant to model launches and updates.
Work with internal stakeholders to identify safety-related product gaps, specification changes, and validation requirements that may influence ANCAP performance or local market suitability.
Assist in preparing vehicles, information, and technical feedback required for internal assessment or external safety-related discussions.
4. Specification and Technical Audit Management
Conduct detailed specification checks for all relevant change points, including new model launches, model year changes, technical changes, facelifts, and new generation vehicles.
Audit first-batch SOP vehicles before launch to verify market-facing specifications and identify discrepancies.
Record findings clearly, escalate issues to headquarters product owners, and track resolution to closure.
Maintain photographic and documentary evidence of vehicle specification checks for future business reference and issue resolution.
5. Hands-On Technical Support and Vehicle Assessment
Perform practical hands-on reviews of vehicles, components, features, and systems to validate technical content and market suitability.
Support troubleshooting of product-wide technical issues where required.
Assist with technical review of tyre, wheel, glazing, and other vehicle data needed by internal departments.
Provide practical feedback from real vehicle assessments to support product improvement and launch quality.
6. Cross-Functional Coordination
Act as a technical liaison between local teams and global product / engineering stakeholders.
Coordinate with internal functions including Aftersales, Sales, Retail Performance, Accessories, Compliance, and Product Planning.
Support technical information flow required for launch readiness, business operations, and product issue management.
Help ensure technical decisions are reflected accurately across documentation, launch materials, and business systems.
7. Technical Data and Product Information Management
Maintain and support vehicle technical information including wheel and tyre data, window specifications, and model technical records.
Support setup and validation of model-related information needed for internal and industry reporting.
Ensure technical records are current, accurate, and accessible for business use.
Skills and Experience
Essential
Experience in automotive product, engineering, homologation, or technical specialist roles.
Good understanding of vehicle homologation, regulatory compliance, and local market technical requirements.
Knowledge of ANCAP and broader vehicle safety / validation principles.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and participate in vehicle testing and validation activities.
Strong hands-on capability with vehicles, including practical inspection and technical assessment.
Ability to interpret technical documents, specifications, and compliance materials.
Strong cross-functional coordination and stakeholder management skills.
High attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve specification or technical issues.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel for vehicle assessments and testing activities as required.
Desirable
Experience with ADR / ECE compliance processes.
Experience preparing vehicles for validation, launch, or regulatory review.
Exposure to EV / PHEV product programs.
Experience working with overseas engineering or product planning teams.
Familiarity with product change management, launch processes, and technical audits.
Chinese Mandarin Proficiency
Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Proven experience in evaluating electric and hybrid vehicles or related automotive technologies.
Proficiency with automotive tools, diagnostic equipment, and data acquisition systems.
Strong understanding of electric powertrain systems, suspension and chassis design.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and report writing.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
