About the Role
Based in BYD's Melbourne office in Mulgrave, this role will support our Product team. The Product Technical Specialist is responsible for supporting vehicle technical readiness, local market compliance, and product validation activities for Australia and selected regional markets. The role acts as a key technical link between local business functions and global engineering teams, ensuring vehicles are fit for market, compliant with relevant regulations, and aligned with expected product attributes before and after launch.
This role requires strong capability in vehicle homologation, ANCAP awareness, hands-on vehicle assessment, and the ability to coordinate and participate in local testing and validation activities. The position also supports specification accuracy, cross-functional technical problem solving, and product management tasks across the vehicle lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Technical Information Management
Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical data across all BYD models and variants.
Compile and maintain vehicle specifications including tyres, wheels, dimensions, weights, drivetrain, batteries, charging, towing, accessories, and related attributes
Cross-check technical data against engineering sources, vehicle records, and approved documentation
Ensure consistency, accuracy, and accessibility of technical records for internal stakeholders
Support ongoing updates as models, variants, and specifications evolve
2. Business, Dealer & Technical Product Support
Provide technical product information and support to internal teams and the dealer network.
Respond to requests for vehicle specifications and technical data
Support stock ordering, parts setup, accessory planning, registration, marketing, training, service preparation, and reporting needs
Prepare specification sheets, product bulletins, comparison tables, FAQs, and technical summaries
Provide clear explanations of vehicle features, technologies, model differences, and product updates
3. Product Knowledge, Events & Training Support
Develop strong product expertise and support business activities requiring technical knowledge.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of BYD products, platforms, technologies, and updates
Support product launches, dealer events, training sessions, and customer-facing activities
Assist with vehicle walkarounds, feature explanations, and training materials
Capture feedback and recurring questions from the field to improve internal knowledge resources
4. Reporting & Data Administration
Support vehicle data governance and reporting requirements.
Assist with RAV, NEVDIS, NZTA, VFACTS, and related reporting systems
Maintain accurate model, variant, VIN, and specification data within internal systems
Validate data accuracy prior to submission or system updates
Coordinate with stakeholders to resolve data inconsistencies
5. Specification, Bulletins, Accessory & Parts Support
Ensure accurate specification control across product lifecycle updates.
Maintain specification checks for new models, facelifts, running changes, and variant updates
Support preparation of technical bulletins, product updates, and dealer communications
Provide accurate vehicle data to support accessories, parts, and stock planning
Identify and resolve discrepancies in specifications, compatibility, and product records
Assist with documentation required for accessory programs and internal approvals
6. Technical Reference, Issue Tracking & Regulatory Support
Maintain technical reference information and support issue tracking processes.
Maintain reference data for key vehicle systems including infotainment, ADAS, drivetrain, charging, lighting, brakes, and accessories
Track and document technical issues, field feedback, and recurring product concerns
Coordinate with Product, Engineering, Aftersales, Dealers, and HQ on issue status and resolutions
Assist in summarising regulatory frameworks including ADR, ECE, NZTA, and homologation requirements
Escalate complex technical, diagnostic, or compliance matters to specialist teams
7. Industry Workgroup & Technical Directive Support
Support engagement with industry bodies and technical forums.
Participate in relevant industry workgroups, technical forums, and regulatory meetings (e.g. FCAI, ANCAP, government bodies)
Monitor and summarise technical directives, regulatory updates, and industry requirements
Prepare internal summaries, action registers, and follow-up documentation
Coordinate with internal teams to ensure updates are understood and implemented
Escalate complex regulatory or policy matters to appropriate stakeholders
Skills and Experience
Essential
Experience in automotive product, engineering, homologation, or technical specialist roles.
Good understanding of vehicle homologation, regulatory compliance, and local market technical requirements.
Knowledge of ANCAP and broader vehicle safety / validation principles.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and participate in vehicle testing and validation activities.
Strong hands-on capability with vehicles, including practical inspection and technical assessment.
Ability to interpret technical documents, specifications, and compliance materials.
Strong cross-functional coordination and stakeholder management skills.
High attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve specification or technical issues.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel for vehicle assessments and testing activities as required.
Desirable
Experience with ADR / ECE compliance processes.
Experience preparing vehicles for validation, launch, or regulatory review.
Exposure to EV / PHEV product programs.
Experience working with overseas engineering or product planning teams.
Familiarity with product change management, launch processes, and technical audits.
Chinese Mandarin Proficiency
Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Proven experience in evaluating electric and hybrid vehicles or related automotive technologies.
Proficiency with automotive tools, diagnostic equipment, and data acquisition systems.
Strong understanding of electric powertrain systems, suspension and chassis design.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and report writing.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
