About the Role
Based in BYD's Melbourne office in Mulgrave, the Compliance Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the compliance framework for the Australian/New Zealand operations of the BYD & Denza. The role ensures adherence to Australian regulatory requirements across vehicle safety, consumer law, competition law, environmental standards, data privacy, and corporate governance, while supporting ethical business conduct and risk mitigation.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory & Legal Compliance
Monitor and report on Australian laws and regulations impacting BYD and Denza operations, including:
Australian Consumer Law (ACL)
Motor Vehicle Standards Act (MVSA) / Road Vehicle Standards Act (RVSA)
ACCC, Department of Infrastructure, and state-based regulators
Environmental and emissions regulations (e.g. ADRs, EV-related obligations)
Privacy Act and data protection requirements
OH&S
Advise business stakeholders on compliance obligations across sales, marketing, aftersales, recalls, warranties, fleet, and finance products.
Support regulatory filings, approvals, audits, and inspections.
Compliance Framework & Risk Management
Develop, implement, and maintain compliance policies, procedures, and controls.
Conduct compliance risk assessments and gap analyses across business units.
Support internal audits and remediation activities.
Track and report compliance metrics and incidents to senior management.
Training & Awareness
Deliver practical Work Health & Safety (WHS) and compliance training to internal teams and dealers.
Promote a strong culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
Act as a point of contact for compliance-related queries.
Investigations & Incident Management
Manage compliance incidents, complaints, and breaches, including root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Support internal investigations and whistleblower matters.
Coordinate with Legal on regulator engagement, enforcement actions, and recalls.

Skills & Experience
Essential
3+ years’ experience in WHS, safety, or operational compliance roles within automotive, logistics, manufacturing, or similar environments.
Strong working knowledge of Australian WHS legislation, Australian Consumer Law and regulatory frameworks.
Experience implementing compliance frameworks and conducting risk assessments.
Ability to translate legal requirements into practical business guidance.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Desirable
Automotive experience – especially with vehicle recalls, safety compliance or product compliance.
Exposure to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and regulatory frameworks.
Legal qualification or compliance certification.
Multi Lingual – English and Mandarin.
